George Henry Thomas; (1816-1870), American major general, who became famous in the Civil War as “the Rock of Chickamauga.” He was born in Southampton county, Virginia, on July 31, 1816. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1840, and served in the Seminole War in Florida and in the Mexican War, where he distinguished himself at the battles of Monterey and Buena Vista.
When the Civil War came, Thomas remained loyal to the Union. In August 1861 he was commissioned a brigadier general. On Jan. 19, 1862, he won the Battle of Mill Springs, which secured eastern Kentucky for the Union. Promoted to major general, he served in the Perryville campaign and fought at Stones River (Murfreesboro), Dec. 31, 1862, to Jan. 2, 1863, where he was a tower of strength in command of the center of the Union line.
In the Battle of Chickamauga on Sept. 19-20, 1863, his heroic stand on the second day saved the Army of the Cumberland from disaster and earned him his sobriquet. Chosen by Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant to command that army, he led it to victory at Missionary Ridge on Nov. 25, 1863, and throughout Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman’s campaign to capture Atlanta.
When General Sherman began his “March to the Sea,” Thomas was left with only a small force to face the Confederate army under Gen. John B. Hood, who began a daring advance northward into Tennessee. Hood’s failures at Spring Hill and Franklin gave Thomas time to collect a larger force. At Nashville on Dec. 15-16, 1864, he almost annihilated Hood’s army.
Thomas died at San Francisco on March 28, 1870. Next to Grant and Sherman, he was undoubtedly the most capable Union leader.
