Summary

The play begins at Monkswell Manor, a guesthouse in the countryside of England, where a young couple, Mollie and Giles Ralston, have just opened for business. As they prepare for their first guests to arrive, a detective named Sergeant Trotter arrives and tells them about a murder that has occurred in London, in which the victim was strangled with a pair of nylon stockings. He believes that the killer may be headed to Monkswell Manor, and asks the Ralstons to keep an eye out for any suspicious behavior.

As the guests arrive, they include Mr. and Mrs. Boyle, a wealthy older couple; Mr. Paravicini, a mysterious foreign gentleman; Miss Casewell, a young woman who is traveling alone; and Christopher Wren, a nervous young man who claims to be an architect. They are all soon trapped at the guesthouse due to a snowstorm that has blocked the roads.
