On June 30, International Asteroid Day will make everyone look up into the sky.
The party was founded after the 2014 release of the movie 51 Degrees North, which explores what would happen if an asteroid hit London. The film’s creative team (many of whom are scientists) wanted to raise awareness of the threat from asteroids to Earth and how we can help protect ourselves. To make that happen, they formed a base and, in 2015, celebrated the world’s first International Asteroid Day.
There are over a million asteroids in space that could hit Earth, but modern scientists have only discovered about one percent of them. To combat this, the founders of Asteroid Day, as well as a host of accomplished scientists, created the 100X Asteroid Statement. The statement aims for scientists to work to increase the asteroid discovery rate to 100,000 per year in a decade. International Asteroid Day focuses on spreading the declaration and helping other Earthlings prepare for a possible asteroid impact.
INTERNATIONAL ASTEROID DAY ACTIVITIES
Organize an event in your community
If there is not yet an Asteroid Day event in your area, consider hosting your own. The party is often celebrated with activities such as lectures, debates and concerts. Hosting your own could be a great benefit to your community. It’s also a great way to do your part to help raise awareness and meet like-minded members of your community who share your interest in asteroids.
Look 51 degrees north
Watch the movie that started it all, but get ready to experience an avalanche of emotions. The film is fictional, but it’s an exploration of a potential real-world setting, and it gives you plenty to think about. It is a great motivator to learn more about asteroids and how to stay safe in the event of an impact.
Volunteer for Asteroid Day organizers
The creators and organizers of the holidays need volunteers to help them make the world events of Asteroid Day run smoothly. More than 700 events are expected this year, and volunteers can help organize events, create content, design graphics, and help spread the word.
WHY WE LOVE INTERNATIONAL ASTEROID DAY
Understandably, most people are so focused on what is happening here on earth that they have no idea that asteroids pose a threat to our security. International Asteroid Day is a great way to combat lack of awareness on the subject. In the event that an asteroid hits the earth, vacations and the movement around it can make a big difference in preparing people to protect themselves.
Encourage space exploration.
International Asteroid Day inspires ordinary people to hit books and learn more about the sky above them and the galaxy around us. Among established scientists, the holiday creates an incentive for future research and perhaps even an increase in scientific funding. The United Nations General Assembly has officially recognized the holiday, which will generate much more stimulus for research. Cheers to shape brilliant minds!
Bring people together for a common cause.
Humans are more alike than we are different, and nothing makes this clearer than a shared threat that could harm the entire planet if it attacked. Protecting ourselves from asteroids is a much more effective effort if the world’s greatest minds come together to share ideas.
