Using a device or vehicle by charging it with an accumulator (a power source);

  • Reducing carbon dioxide emissions,
  • saving fuel,
  • Less encounters with malfunctions and repair situations,
  • Reducing maintenance cost due to scarcity of moving parts and
  • Unlike internal combustion engines, it also means eliminating loud noise and vibration .

As many people know, electric vehicles (Electric Vehicles: EV) work much differently than conventional vehicles. EVs, which enable the movement of the battery by charging the battery instead of the fuel engine, can also be shown among the vehicles that work with the battery in this respect. Electric vehicles are also a type of vehicle that is environmentally friendly, comfortable and less costly.

1. What are Battery Powered Vehicles?

Other than electric vehicles, battery-powered vehicles include electric bicycles, electric boats, ATVs, golf carts, motorcycles and tractors . Electric vehicles, on the other hand, are the latest generation of vehicles powered by batteries. The battery in electric vehicles, as well as the driving power, the vehicle’s lighting system and so on. It also provides to meet the energy needs of the components.

Batteries are also used in conventional vehicles with internal combustion engines. However, the battery provides the initial energy required for propulsion in these vehicles. It also provides the energy needed by certain parts of the vehicle when it is not moving. In short, the battery is used for the operation of lighting systems and automatic systems such as wipers, locks and air conditioners in internal combustion vehicles, just like in electric vehicles.

2. What is Battery in Electric Vehicles?

In electric vehicles, the battery is the power source that creates the movement of the vehicle by charging it. The battery nomenclature is used for the part that uses the chemical energy stored by the batteries in the battery as electrical energy when needed. In EVs, the battery stores power by charging the vehicle with electrical energy. However, how much power can be stored in an electric vehicle battery differs according to the energy capacity of the battery used in the vehicle.

3. What are the Battery Types in Electric Vehicles?

Batteries used in electric vehicles can have many different features. These batteries, which can store different degrees of power according to their energy capacity, are produced from materials such as lead acid, nickel cadmium, lithium polymer and sodium sulfide for use in electric vehicles. Well, how about taking a look at the most widely used batteries in electric vehicles to date?

3.1. Lead Acid Batteries

The lead acid battery is known as the first rechargeable battery model. The lead acid battery, which has a low energy density compared to today’s modern rechargeable batteries, also carries a low cost. However, nowadays it is not preferred in electric vehicles.

3.2. Nickel Cadmium Batteries

Nickel cadmium battery is also known by the names NiCd and NiCad for short. This type of battery has a higher energy density compared to lead acid batteries. In order for nickel cadmium batteries to have a long life, they need to be charged when the charge is completely gone. For this reason, this type of battery is not preferred much in electric vehicles today.

3.3. Nickel Metal Hydride Batteries

The nickel metal hydride battery offers a higher energy storage capacity than the nickel cadmium battery. For this reason, it is preferred more than the other. Just like the nickel cadmium battery, it is recommended to charge this battery type after it is fully discharged in order to have a long life. Nickel metal hydride batteries are not seen as a suitable option for electric vehicles due to both this feature and the large space in the vehicle.

3.4. Lithium Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion battery maintains its superiority among other electric vehicle batteries for many years. Lithium-ion batteries, which have a much higher energy capacity compared to other batteries, offer long-term use due to their slow discharge. This type of battery, which is less affected by weather changes such as temperature, stands out among electric vehicle batteries due to its safety against leaks. Lithium-ion batteries are also the most preferred type of battery in electric vehicles because they take up less space.
