When Selena Gomez took a hiatus in 2015, nobody understood what she was going through. Everyone thought that the singer was still mending her broken heart after a rollercoaster relationship with Canadian crooner Justin Bieber in previous years.
However, it was far more serious than just a heartbreak: it was the year when she was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease wherein the immune system wrongly targets your tissues.
According to Medical University of South Carolina doctor Gary Gilkenson, it happens when your body resistance starts attacking your own organs instead of infections.
Unfortunately, this disease, which affects an average of 1.5 million individuals in the United States, has no cure and worse, it could wreak havoc to major organs.
The more common type, systemic lupus erythematosus, usually damages the heart, brain, lungs, or kidneys — most frequently the latter because it is where proteins are being stored, the expert added.
So while everyone only had speculations on why Selena was suddenly out of the busy scene, the former Disney child star had her hands full as she juggled creating music and battling the illness.
In 2017, the Wolves hitmaker took to Instagram to inform her fans of what she was going through and its severity.
Selena also revealed that she underwent an emergency kidney transplant because of organ failure.
She explained in the lengthy caption of her post, which was a telling picture of her and another woman at the hospital, that she was extremely grateful for her best friend Francia Raisa for the huge sacrifice of being the donor.
After this, the songstress allegedly sought treatment because her mental health suffered a blow following her bout with lupus. Years before this, Selena was already reported to have been dealing with anxiety and depression.
Just recently, the Barney and Friends alum opened up about how terrifying the entire ordeal was for her and what exactly happened. The 27-year-old shared that she thought she might die after her kidney failed.
The celebrity also narrated how intense the medical emergency was, which prompted doctors to remove some arteries on her legs.
Luckily, Selena went through all that with a chin held up high and as she recounted the journey she had been through, she feels happy that she gets to live.
When Selena told her supporters of the kidney transplant, this had her and ex Justin talking again, which fueled reconciliation rumors.
Speaking of which, theWhat Do You Mean? singer is dealing with Lyme disease, a serious and incurable health problem that comes from a bite of an infected tick.
