September; is the ninth month of the Gregorian calendar. It derives its name in part from the Latin word septem, nıeaning “seven,” since it was the seventh month of the Roman year, which began in March.

September has 30 days, and the autumnal equinox, marking the beginning of the fail season, occurs on September 22d. In the United States, Labor Day, which is celebrated on the first Monday of September, is traditionally regarded as the end of the summer season. The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, usually occurs in September. Michaelmas, the feast of the archangel Michael, is observed on September 29th.

The astrological signs for September are Virgo (August 23 to September 22) and Libra (September 23 to October 22). The birthstone for the month is the sapphire or the star sapphire.

In military history, September was an important month. World War II began and ended during September. Germany invaded Poland on Sept. 1, 1939, opening hostilities, and Britain and France declared war on Germany on September 3. Representatives of Japan signed surrender documents on board the USS Missouri on Sept. 2, 1945. During the American Revolution the Battle of Yorktown, which led to the surrender of the British forces under General Cornwallis, was fought during September 1781.

Two presidents died in office as the result of assassin’s bullets during September, James A. Garfield (Sept. 19, 1881) and William McKinley (Sept. 14, 1901).
