Jean-Pierre Blanchard; (1753-1809), French balloonist, who did more than anyone else to popularize ballooning. He was born at Le Petit-Andely on July 4, 1753. Blanchard first came into prominence in 1781, when he built a vaisseau volant (flying vessel) with manually operated flappers, which, however, could not take off. He made his first balloon ascent in 1784 and attained world fame by being the first to pilot a balloon across the English Channel, on Jan. 7, 1785; he grudgingly took with him the American physician John Jeffries, who financed the Channel flight. Their flight, from England to France, was a nightmarish experience, during which they had to throw overboard everything movable (in a moment of panic, Blanchard even threw his breeches overboard); but they at last landed safely in the forest of Guines, near Calais. Thereafter Blanchard made first ascents in as many places as he could; he was the first up in America (Philadelphia, Jan. 9, 1793).
Blanchard was also the first to test a propeller (hand-operated) on a balloon, in 1784; it was a good but unsuccessful effort. He was the first to release parachutes from balloons (1785), sending down cats and dogs to amuse the crowds, but he did not parachute himself. He had made nearly 60 balloon ascents by the time of his death at The Hague, Netherlands, on March 7, 1809.
