Heat and temperature are often used as synonyms in our daily conversation. However, they are not the same. Heat energy is the result of the movement of the particles in matter. When heat is gained or lost by a substance the kinetic energy of its particles changes. The temperature of a substance is a measure of the average kinetic energy ofits particles, or of how hot or how cold the matter is.

Suppose you have a bucket of boiling water. Pour some of the boiling water into a small beaker. With which one could you melt the most ice, a bucket of water or a beaker of water? With a bucket of water, of course. It is possible for a substance to be at a high temperature and give out a small amount of heat; to be at a high temperature and give out a large amount of heat, to be at a low temperature and give out a large amount of heat; or to be at a low temperature and give a small amount of heat.

Why is Temperature Important For Life?

The amount of heat energy possessed by a body determines its temperature. The same amount of heat energy possessed by different substances does not give each the same temperature. The relationship between heat and temperature is different for different substances. When a body gains heat its temperature rises. When a body loses heat its temperature falls.
